The mystery of Gnawa trance music
The Gnawa people have been shrouded in mystery since they were taken from the Malian empire and brought as slaves to Morocco. The power of their trance music has come into the spotlight through Western musicians (from Led Zeppelin to Archie Shepp) who help circulate the secret amongst those fascinated by the origin of the blues and the mystic connection of the music.
This film is an intimate portrait of two men who found each other like lost brothers separated by time. Time we now call history. Sibiri, bambarra musician of Mali, and Brahim, gnawa musician from Morroco. This 52 minute documentary is witness to these masters of the supernatural as they transmit secret knowledge to their children. As a testament to a fast changing Africa, we rediscover the meaning of transmission because who knows the color of the chick before it hatches?

Les Gnawa et leur musique de transe sont depuis vingt ans sous le feu des projecteurs. De Led Zeppelin à Archie Shepp, des musiciens Occidentaux ont fait circuler le secret parmi ceux fascinés par les origines du blues, par la dimension mystique de la musique. Á l´occasion d'une rencontre musicale à Marrakech, deux grands musiciens, l´un Gnawa, l´autre Bambarra, tous deux élevés dans la culture de la transe, partagent avec leurs enfants, devant la caméra, leur connaissance de la musique et de la guérison.
Ce portrait intimiste de deux familles d´aujourd´hui explore les origines des Gnawa, l´expérience de la transe et redécouvre le sens de la transmission d´une génération à l´autre, car qui connait la couleur du poussin avant qu´il éclose?

Beautifully filmed encounter between traditional Gnawa musicians from Morocco and Malian musicians (the Gnawas are descendants of black slaves that were taken into Morocco). A must for anybody interested in trance, music, rituals, etc. The portraits are amazingly intimate.
