MYSTICAL ARTS OF TIBET

directed by John Allen
Produced by Bella LeNestour

Nine monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery laid grains of colored sand to produce this sand mandala in five days during the World festival of Sacred music 1999.

We installed a time lapse camera in the rafters of the museum. It shot continuously for 5 days. Although we had tested the effect ahead of time, we were happily surprised with the blurry effect of the monks in action. At the end of the meticulous building of this sand mandala, part of the ritual was to dismantle it in seconds so that the monks could take the remains to the beach and pour the sand back to the water.
